Blur have entered the album charts at No 1 with The Magic Whip, which at times last week was selling more than the rest of the top five combined. It’s their sixth No 1 album, and sees them back on top 12 years after the release of their last album, Think Tank, which also topped the charts.
The rest of the albums top five sees Taylor Swift’s 1989 rise from No 10 to No 2, with James Bay, Josh Groban and Meghan Trainor following behind.
In the singles chart, Felix Jaehn’s remix of Cheerleader by OMI makes the move from No 2 to No 1. The only new entry in the top five is at No 3, in the form of Carly Rae Jepsen’s I Really Like You, which had been No 1 in the midweek charts. Completing the top five are Wiz Khalifa ft Charlie Puth (See You Again – No 2), Major Lazer ft Mo and DJ Snake (Lean On – No 4) and Jess Glynne (Hold My Hand).
Lower down the chart, Skepta has found that getting your gig shut down by the police doesn’t guarantee you a wave of notoriety to propel you into the charts. Last Thursday he played an unlicensed show in an east London car park which was duly, as he predicted from the stage, shut down – a phrase that happens to be the title of his new single. Shutdown entered the chart at No 39.
