This expert-approved fish supplement has no fishy taste – but there's one drawback

Omega-3s are linked to heart and brain health - (Emilie Lavinia/The Standard)

Being an adult is, simply, a logistical nightmare. That, and I find that the older I get, the more tinctures, potions, supplements and nutritional support I apparently need in my diet just to get by. One of said things – and arguably one of the most prominent ones – is Omega 3... but I think I’ve got that cracked. Let’s get into it.

We’ve long been told, since being little kids at the dinner table, that a staple of our diets ought to be oily fish, ideally two portions per week. However, that can be tricky. And more than a few of us, myself included, aren’t naturally drawn to the tastes of salmon, sardines, mackerel and trout. That’s where Omega 3 supplements come in.

Having grown up in a family with a keen nutritionist and ex-PT as a mother, I can remember these orange-hued capsules cropping up ever since. However, not all Omega 3 is created equal.

They come in a range of strengths and ratios, with some far more eco-friendly, easy to use, pure and/or effective than others. Registered nutritionist Karen Preece Smith told The Standard: “Fish oil provides EPA and DHA, the two long-chain omega-3s most linked to heart health, healthy triglyceride levels and brain cell membrane structure... DHA is a major structural fat in brain cell membranes, so it's essential, not optional.”

So, we know we need Omega 3, but with thousands of products available on the market, how are we to pick just one? Fortunately, contributing wellness editor Emilie Lavinia has done the hard work (and the reviewing) for you, and the clear consensus is this: Wild Nutrition’s Pure Strength Omega-3 is a major contender.

What is it that our reviewers loved about Wild Nutrition? A myriad of things, namely that there is no fishy taste or smell at all, which can’t be said for a lot of its counterparts. Plus, Wild Nutrition itself is a certified B-Corp company, meaning that you can get the nutrition you need without any niggling environmental guilt. Those are the headlines, but let’s get into the specs.

Wild Nutrition’s Pure Strength Omega 3 supports heart, brain and eye health via the optimal 2:1 ratio of the aforementioned and vital EPA and DHA. It can be taken with or without food, and Emilie praised it as “a great option for supplement purists who seek quality.”

Plus, the fish oil used is MSC-certified, in triglyceride form and has been independently tested for toxins and heavy metals, meaning you can rest easy that this product shouldn’t give you any stomach issues, as well as being a sustainable option.

Now... the catch (no fishing pun intended). The only negative that our expert could find of this product? The recommended dose is four capsules per day. Yes, as negatives go, it’s certainly not a whopper, but it is a little inconvenient to fit into your everyday schedule.

That said, for an optimal balancing of EPA and DHA, no stomach issues and its benefit to the environment, I’d see it as a pretty minor issue. Plus, with 120 capsules in the bottle, you’re stocked up for quite some time. The balancing act is up to us, and consistency – as always – is key.
