This Egyptian goalkeeper’s ludicrous move forced him to follow with an acrobatic save

Perhaps Mahmoud Gad was a little too bold.

In the Egyptian Premier league, the ENPPI goalkeeper came flying out of the net Saturday to clear a cross away from a Pyramids forward, who seemed he might have been capable of beating the ENPPI defender. Gad’s rush for the ball — and diving header — seemed like a worthwhile gamble, even if it felt gratuitously theatrical. But it would not end up being the most acrobatic bid he had at the ball in the sequence of play.

Gad’s header deflected the ball directly to a Pyramids player, who chipped the ball toward the goal. The keeper sprinted back for the net and got a fist on the ball to knock it over the goalpost. Had Gad not gotten his hand on the ball, it would have almost certainly been a goal.

Here’s the play.

Despite Gad’s best efforts, ENPPI fell to Pyramids, 4-0. And while his efforts in this highlight-reel play were borderline silly, nothing will ever top Colombia’s Rene Higuita famous scorpion-kick clearance.
