However a clever new technique could save you time and effort.
Instead of hacking away with a scraper or pouring on boiling water - and hoping it doesn't break the glass - a sandwich bag and hot water is the answer.
All you have to do is fill the sandwich bag with warm water straight from the tap and then rub it across your car windows, say Hull Live.
Not only does it clear the ice straightaway, but it also keeps your hands warm too.
Other tips for de-icing your car are to wait until the ice is clear before switching on windscreen wipers, as it could break the motor.
Air conditioning will help clear the window faster and drivers should make sure their window is completely clear before driving away, say the AA.
However be wary about leaving your car running without you in it, as thieves are always on the look out for the chance to steal a car given half a chance.
