Thiruvananthapuram: Police, Youth Congress activists clash

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Police resorted to lathicharge and used tear gas to disperse the Youth Congress workers who took out a march to the government secretariat on Saturday.

There was a massive turnout in the Youth Congress march led by YC state president and MLA Shafi Parambil. The march was taken out to protest against the attack on the party offices and Congress workers over the past few days.

The march turned violent when the activists tried to remove the barricades installed by police. They also hurled stones and bottles at the police, which led to the lathicharge.

However, the Youth Congress leaders alleged that the police resorted to lathicharge without any provocation and injured many of their workers. In the incident, four workers suffered injuries and they were shifted to the general hospital.

For half an hour, the entire MG Road looked like a war zone and the workers were not ready to disperse even after the lathicharge.

“At least 25 tear gas shells and grenades were used against us by the police. The police had attacked us without any provocation,” said Youth Congress state vice-president K S Sabarinathan.

Later, senior Congress leaders like Kovalam MLA M Vincent and UDF district convener Chempazhanthi Anil reached the spot to pacify the workers. Before dispersing, the workers took out a march along the MG Road.
