Thieving carer stole thousands from 'extremely vulnerable' man's bank account

A carer has been struck off after stealing thousands from a vulnerable man's bank account.

Louise Webster pocketed £750 in cash in just three transactions from resident AA while taking him to the shop in Lanarkshire for cigars, sweets and juice, despite being told by bosses twice that she was not permitted to take him there.

The Scottish Social Services Council, Scotland's care worker watchdog, heard colleagues at Hillend View Care Home in Airdrie caught Webster out when they printed out a bank statement at another ATM in August 2019.

Further statements dating back to May 2019 showed 30 transactions of £250. The panel noted the withdrawals of £250 were made while she was on shift, working closely with the resident, and there were none when the carer was on leave between July 23 and August 15.

A Fitness to Practice panel statement read: "Given the values and attitudinal concerns that arise from your actions, the behaviour is not considered to be easily remediable, particularly when considering the given number of separate instances, the prolonged period of time the behaviour occurred over, the abuse of trust, and the level of financial harm caused towards the service user.

"You have failed to accept responsibility for your actions. The Presenter considers that there is a high risk that you would repeat your behaviour, which would place further vulnerable people at the risk of harm. A finding of impairment is therefore necessary to protect the public and uphold standards of conduct expected from social service workers.

"The Panel agrees with the Presenter that there is no evidence of any insight, regret or apology on your part and your co-operation with SSSC has been minimal and not particularly meaningful.

"It was the view of the Panel that your pattern of behaviour renders you unfit to be a member of a caring and responsible profession."
