Thieves steal two catalytic converters in the space of 45 minutes

Thieves removed two catalytic converters in the space of 45 minutes from two cars including a taxi.

The first theft happened in Trentham Gardens, Aspley at around 12.26am.

A neighbour heard drilling noises during the early hours of Wednesday, July 8.

The neighbour is reported to have gone outside and challenged the person, who then left Trentham Gardens in what is believed to be an Audi A5.

Less than one hour later, in Ravesby Gardens, a second victim contacted police to report they could see a person breaking into their taxi.

Once the offender left, the victim went outside to try and start the car, however it failed to do so.

Catalytic converters, which convert vehicle exhaust emissions into less toxic gasses, are targeted because they contain high value metals.

Sergeant Ian Johnson, who is investigating the incident, said: "At this stage we do believe both incidents to be linked.

"It is upsetting for victims whose cars have had their catalytic converter stolen as they are left without their car and they also have to foot the bill for an expensive repair.

"In order to protect your vehicle from this type of theft, consider protective marking, and check with your vehicle's manufacturer to see if there are any protective guards you can purchase.

"If you can, park your vehicle in a locked garage when it is unattended but if it’s not possible to garage your vehicle, park it in a busy, well-lit area as close to your property as possible.

"If you have any information that can help with our enquiries, please contact 101 quoting incident number 22 of 8 July 2020 for the Trentham Gardens incident or incident number 43 of 8 July 2020 for the Ravesby Gardens incident."
