Ice Cube celebrated as Black Lives Matter protesters in Bristolpulled down a statue of slave trader Edward Colston.
The American rapper reshared a tweet from British political commentator Owen Jones about Colston’s involvement in the slave trade, adding the words: “THEY WILL ALL FALL.”
In response to pictures of Colston’s statue being thrown into the docks, Ice Cube also wrote: “One hood.”
The statue of Colston, which has stood on Bristol’s Colston Avenue since 1895, was toppled on Sunday (7 June) by protesters for the Black Lives Matter movement who rolled it towards Bristol Harbour where it was dumped into the River Avon.
The monument has long divided people in Bristol, with more than 11,000 residents previously signing a petition to have the statue taken down, as well as demanding the city rename the buildings and streets that were named after the slave trader.
Protesters have come together across the world to demand a change in behaviour towards black people following the death of George Floyd, who died in Minneapolis, Minnesota in May after a police officer knelt on his neck for nine minutes.
Demonstrations continued this weekend (6 and 7 June), with thousands of people taking part in protests in London, Edinburgh and other UK cities and towns.
