They tried to blow up this tower at a Welsh gas terminal but things didn't quite go to plan

An attempt to bring down a chimney stack at an industrial site in Milford Haven didn't quite go to plan. The controlled demolition planned for the CoGen tower at the Dragon LNG gas terminal in Waterston on Sunday, September 20, drew large crowds of people hoping to witness a spectacle.

However, the event turned out to be a bit of an anti-climax as once the dust cleared it was clear that the chimney wasn't playing ball - and was still very much standing.

A number of onlookers recorded the event and shared their footage online, with one commenter labelling the tower left behind as the "leaning tower of Pembs".

Another comment said the late Lancastrian steeplejack turned TV celebrity, Fred Dibnah, would have "had it down in seconds."

In the footage, following the controlled explosion, the tower can be seen dropping and then leaning slightly before settling, still upright.

Dragon LNG, the owner of the site, which is a terminal for imported Liquefied Natural Gas [LNG], said the tower didn't pose a danger to anyone in its current state and they were looking into the next steps to demolish it safely.

A spokesman for the company said: "Further to the partial collapse of the Cogen chimney stack today, leaving the chimney standing, a survey has been undertaken and plans are underway.

"The primary focus remains the safe demolition of the stack.

"The exclusion zones remain in place on site and operations remain unaffected.

"Due to the strict safety procedures in place, prior to the planned demolition, there is no danger to our team, other site occupants, or the community."
