‘There should be a warning on the bag’: Sprouts customer eats Brazil nuts. Then she wakes up in ‘critical condition’

TikTok user Shanice Marie (@_theshanicemarie_) looked death straight in the eye recently. Why? Because she ate some Brazil nuts.

In a viral clip that has garnered 193,600 views, Marie sat in the car as she shared her cautionary tale with the audience.

She said Brazil nuts nearly killed her

“These should have a warning on the bag,” she said, holding a large bag of Brazil nuts up to the camera. “And before you say, I’m crazy, just listen,” she added.”What’s considered a healthy eater?”

Marie then went on to explain that she “literally [has] an addiction” to Brazil nuts—so much so that she ate two thirds of the bag in one sitting. However, she says this led to her waking up “in critical condition” in the middle of the night.

“I felt terrible,” she said. “Like my limbs felt like they were about to fall off, seriously.” Because the Brazil nuts were the only thing she ate, Marie proceeded to look up Brazil nuts online—where she was met with a surprising discovery.

“Brazil nuts can kill you,” she alleged. “Supposedly, they have too much selenium … and that can literally, like, paralyze you.”

Marie ended the video with a warning: “So y’all don’t eat a whole lot of Brazil nuts,” she said. “Like, I don’t know how nobody knows. Like, I never knew this. So just imagine if I ate the whole bag, I’d probably be dead.”

She continues, “Put a warning on these bags. That is crazy. No one knows it. I never even heard anybody say this. I had to look this up because I’m like, I’m dying. Like, what is going on? Like, just don’t overindulge. Don’t overindulge in the Brazil nuts.”

Viewers shared their thoughts in the comments.

One said, “I hate they don’t put a warning label. Found out about this over 10 years ago.” Another pointed out that “nuts in general aren’t for human consumption,” while a third revealed, “I ate like 15 and ended up in the emergency room.”

Are Brazil nuts really dangerous?

On the University Hospitals website, it said that you should only eat one or two Brazil nuts a day. This is because it indeed contains selenium, a trace mineral that can be dangerous in large amounts.

According to the site, an ounce of Brazil nuts, which equates to eight medium nuts, contains 544 micrograms of selenium. This is 777% of the recommended daily allowance.

In turn, if you eat too many nuts, the site says that you could risk developing selenium poisoning. Symptoms of this can include diarrhea, bad breath, skin rashes, lesions, nausea, fatigue and nerve pain. In extreme cases, it can trigger kidney failure, cardiac arrest, and even death.
