Nashville woman looks up between sets and an old Man is already staring. Then he screams at her until she’s trembling: ‘what just happened’

A TikTok video has gained more than 1.3 million views after a 21-year-old woman alleged she was screamed at by an older male gymgoer during a workout at a gym in Nashville, Tennessee. According to creator Hallie McKay, the confrontation began after she reacted to what she described as the man staring at her between sets.

In a tearful video recorded from her car shortly after the encounter, McKay described the confrontation as leaving her visibly shaken. “I just got screamed at, yelled at, by a man at my gym, in public, in front of everyone. I am trembling, shaking. I don’t know what just happened,” she said.

McKay said she later requested the gym owner’s contact information so she could file a formal complaint. She added that gym employees checked on her afterward, apologized for the incident, and asked whether she was okay.

What happened after she confronted the man

According to McKay, she was working out with her headphones on when she noticed an older man repeatedly looking in her direction. She said that after finishing one of her sets and catching him staring again, she shook her head in frustration.

“I finish with my set, I look up, he’s already looking at me. I kind of shake my head like this, because if you’re a woman, you know it is so disgusting and annoying when you’re just trying to get a workout in, and a man is just staring at you in between your sets.”

McKay alleged that the man then began shouting across the gym floor. She said she initially could not hear what he was saying because her headphones were on and her music was playing.

“All of a sudden, he’s screaming. I don’t even hear him at first because my headphones are on. Screaming, screaming: ‘What are you shaking your head at? Like, do you have a problem? I’m in here working out too!'”

She said she responded by confronting the man, asking why he was staring at women while they were working out. She said the exchange continued briefly before coming to an end.

“The screaming really got nowhere. It was really just us going back and forth with each other, me saying, ‘If you weren’t already freaking staring at me when I looked up, maybe I wouldn’t be like shaking my head at you thinking you’re disgusting. Because why are you staring at women in the gym?'”

McKay’s experience is not the first viral incident to spark discussion about how fitness centers handle complaints involving members. Earlier this year, another woman alleged that a Planet Fitness location failed to properly intervene after she said another couple reportedly harassed her during a workout.

McKay said gym employees approached her afterward to check on her well-being and apologize for the incident.

“Even the employees came up to me afterwards, apologizing, like asking if I was okay. No, I’m not okay. As a 21-year-old woman being screamed at by a very grown-ass man… men hating women who stand up for themselves.”

Many commercial fitness chains maintain member codes of conduct that prohibit harassment, intimidation, and disruptive behavior inside their facilities. Viral disputes involving female gymgoers have continued to draw attention to how those policies are enforced, with incidents ranging from dress codes to allegations of harassment.
