There's a smell of 'poo' and 'sour dustbin' across Bristol

There is a bad smell around Bristol today (August 30) - and no-one is quite sure what is.

From Windmill Hill to Frenchay and Stoke Gifford, people from across the city are reporting unpleasant journeys to work.

Bristol Live has been inundated with reports of a "poo smell" around the city, with it so bad around Temple Meads people have been seen checking their shoes.

The stench is so bad, the term 'Bristol Smell' is being widely searched for on Google.

The first sign of the smell appears to have been as early as 7.30am, with Alastair Weston saying he noticed it was "very strong" in Windmill Hill.

By 8am, the smell had spread, with reports of the stench spreading to Temple Meads, Old Market, Frenchay, Stoke Gifford, Whitchurch and Barleyfields.

Bristol Live digital editor Sian David said: "I was on the M2 bus when I first noticed it this morning, at around 8.15am.

"The bus stopped outside Temple Meads and that's where I first noticed it. It was definitely a sewage-y odour.

"I got off the bus at the Marriott and could still smell it while walking across the road by Old Market roundabout."

'Akin to the sour stink of a dustbin'

Owen Metcalf got in touch at around 8.30am, and said: "The whole of Bristol Temple Meads area stinks of dog poo/sewage this morning. Not sure what’s up but everyone checking their shoes…"

Bristol Live court reporter Geoff Bennett said the smell was "akin to the sour stink of a dustbin". Reporter Conor Gogarty smelt the odour, too, saying: "There was a distinct whiff of sewage at the entrance of Bristol Temple Meads.

"As I walked across The Square, it was all I could do not to cover my nose. The pong enveloped the area from the station to the Valentine Bridge."

A spokesman for Network Rail said: “We are unaware of what is causing a smell across Bristol this morning and it is unrelated to any work we are carrying out locally.”

We have contacted Bristol City Council for a comment.
