The worst car park in Swansea is finally getting a spruce up

Swansea’s High Street multi-storey car park is being upgraded to make the facility more welcoming for users.

Swansea Council is repainting the High Street multi-storey car park in an effort to brighten up the building.

The council will also upgrade lighting, and install additional CCTV, along with new exit barriers.

Recent weeks have seen a chorus of criticism of the High Street MSCP, located in Ivey Place, just off High Street in the centre of Swansea and next to the city’s train station.

It has been labelled disgusting and potentially dangerous .

Welsh Assembly Member Bethan Sayed said a recent visit to the car park left her horrified.

And insult was added to injury recently when the handle fell off the main exit door , making it difficult to get out of the building.

Mark Thomas, council cabinet member for environment and infrastructure management, said: “High Street is going through major changes with a number of large regeneration projects under way with around £100 million of investment.

“The main multi-storey car park in High Street is in need of upgrading. We are starting these works immediately to make sure motorists have a better welcome than they currently do.

“We want people to feel safe when using the facility. Along with painting the stairwells and walls on the interior we are looking at other upgrades such as lighting and CCTV coverage.”

The improvements are part of wider major investment taking place in and around High Street where developers are set to move on site at the Mariner Street car park to create a £50 million student development.

A major scheme is already under way to redevelop the Oldway Centre into a 550-bed student accommodation complex, costing around £35 million.

Referring to the Mariner Street plans, council leader Rob Stewart said: “This exciting privately-funded project will help the transformation and regeneration of High Street, building on the success of the Urban Village and other recent success stories in the immediate area.

“It will complement the £35 million transformation of the neighbouring Oldway Centre, which is due to be home to more than 550 students.

“High Street is a key city centre gateway so the Mariner Street scheme is crucial as we transform our leisure, recreational and retail offer by significantly increasing the number of people who live and work there.”
