The Welsh schoolboy genius who's just got a higher IQ score than Einstein

A Welsh schoolboy is officially brainier than science genius Albert Einstein and physicist Stephen Hawking after he scored nearly full marks in the Mensa IQ test.

Seth Olner, who scored 161 out of a possible 162, is not your usual teenager. He has already passed his GCSE French and he can speak Mandarin and Spanish too. He is learning Korean, with a bit of Latin on the side, and offers his opinion on the Brexit debate with more eloquence than most politicians themselves.

On Theresa May he says: "She's got a lot on her plate and I don't think she gets the respect she deserves."

The 13-year-old, who attends Y Pant Comprehensive School in Pontyclun, can't decide if he wants to be a physicist or a diplomat when he grows up.

"Being compared to Einstein is a bit intimidating, because they are big shoes to fill, but it's really exciting too," he said.

"I've earned the nickname Supernerd among my friends at school but we've all got our thing. One friend is really good on the guitar and another is a great singer – I'm just more into my books."

While many children his age have to be dragged to their rooms to do their homework for Seth's mum Jayne and dad Patrick it's the total opposite. They have to drag their son away from his books to make him come down for dinner at their home in Pontyclun.

"I don't know where he gets it from," said Patrick, a freelance photographer. "Getting the results through from Mensa was great and of course we're proud of him but no more proud than we were before.

"He's just so motivated and disciplined. When he was four he asked me whether meteorites were evidence of the Big Bang. I was like: 'Where has that come from?'"

The close family of three have always talked openly and discussed global issues, Seth said.

"When I was little dad would say 'Shall we go and see what is happening in the world tonight?' and we would go into the front room and watch the seven o'clock news," said Seth.

Jayne, a primary school teacher, said one of her son's former teachers had come to her after he started asking questions about the soldiers in Afghanistan. "She didn't really know what to say to him," said Jayne.

Genius physicists Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking never officially had their IQ tested but are widely believed to have the equivalent score of 160. Jayne originally tried to put her bright son off sitting the IQ test in case he didn't get the score he wanted and it knocked his confidence.

Jayne and Patrick are determined to keep Seth grounded and have no plans to take him out of his current school. "We mostly just take the mickey out of him," said Patrick.

As he talks about his favourite books, To Kill a Mockingbird and Animal Farm, or which university he is hoping to go to – Princeton in the US is currently the top choice – it is easy to forget Seth is just a teenage schoolboy.

The urge to learn comes entirely from him, he said, along with the fear he might lose the capacity to learn. "To not do it would be like a painter having all these lovely brushes but not actually using them to paint," said Seth.

"I know I've always wanted to change the world and I've always fancied being the Prime Minister one day.

"I've got my eye on Princeton University because of Einstein – their physics school is very good. I would love to do something on the same level as he did."

For now though all his exams are over and Seth is going to enjoy being a normal kid through the summer holidays. The music fan, who counts The Smiths and Nathaniel Rateliff and The Night Sweats among his favourite bands, has just come back from Glastonbury. The family are planning a trip to east Asia later in the summer where they hope Seth's Korean language skills will help them get around.
