The Welsh Indian restaurant that can't stop winning major awards for its inventive dishes

An Indian restaurant in Port Talbot, which opened just four years ago, has been named the Best Indian Restaurant in Wales in the British Curry Awards 2019 .

The Grand Sultan beat off competition from Empire Restaurant in Cardiff, Rasoi Indian Kitchen in Swansea and Rasoi Waterfront in Swansea, which took home the title in 2018 .

It's the fifth major award for The Grand Sultan this year. The restaurant has also been named the best in Wales in the Welsh Restaurant Awards and the BCA (Bangladesh Caterers Association) Restaurant of the Year awards as well as the best in the UK in EuroAsia 2019 awards.

Meanwhile, the Grand Sultan's Kabul Islam was named Regional Chef of the Year for Wales at the 2019 Asian Restaurant and Takeaway Awards - a year after the diner took the best restaurant title in the awards.

The British Curry Awards have been described as the "curry Oscars" and are in their 15th year.

Diners are asked to nominate their favourite restaurants and then entries are reviewed by a judging panel before a shortlist is announced and the winners are then revealed at a ceremony in London.

Based on the outskirts of the steel town and set next to a golf course overlooking a lake, the Grand Sultan was opened in the former club house.

It has an extensive menu that breaks down into several categories, including chef's recommendations, connoisseur's collection, grill and old favourites. There's also a wide choice for vegetarians.

Among the dishes on the menu are salmon tikka, duck meetha, chilli lamb shank, fish karahi and Tandoori trout but the chefs are willing to tailor-make dishes to suit diners' tastes.

On of the business partners, Sunny Rahman, said: "The reason behind the success of these awards first and foremost is because of our loyal customers, who have nominated and voted for us and it is without their support that none of this could be achieved.

"We have many different dishes to choose from which I am confident you will not find elsewhere. We always endeavour our best efforts to provide the very best and freshest of ingredients using local suppliers where we can to ensure we are helping local businesses. We strive to provide the best service we can to all our customers.

"Our location and ambiance sets us apart from others too, located near the Eglyws y nunydd lake, near the historic Margam park and, of course, the plush greenery of the golf course provides breath taking sunset views."

Recent reviews left on Tripadvisor - where the restaurant has an overall rating of four-and-a-half stars from 282 reviews - include:

"Absolutely delicious best Indian meal I’ve eaten for a very long time, menu was extensive, waiting staff very friendly and courteous, food was plentiful."

"WOW!! Every part of the experience of this place was amazing, the service there was so efficient, people who worked there where great. Food was delicious, the best Indian I have ever been to."

"The food is outstanding with each course having levels of flavour in each mouthful. We (including family) are slowly working through the menu !!!"
