The View co-hosts are notorious for criticizing Donald Trump’s politics, but they took a different route Tuesday and called out the president’s parenting skills after he skipped his own son’s wedding.
Trump was noticeably absent from his eldest son Donald Trump Jr.’s wedding to socialite Bettina Anderson in the Bahamas over the weekend following his remark that he would not be able to attend because “this is not good timing for me, I have a thing called Iran.”
However, the stars of ABC’s daytime talk show speculated during Tuesday’s episode that Trump might not have been as busy with the international conflict as he made it seem — because he fired off dozens of posts on his social media platform Truth Social throughout Memorial Day weekend while his son celebrated his second time tying the knot.
“He said he had the war in Iran and he clearly needed to [post], so things were busy,” co-host Sara Haines said, referring to the series of nonsensical and AI-generated posts that the president shared on Truth Social from Friday to Sunday.
“The war in Iran has been going on and he’s been playing golf, that didn’t stop him,” comedian Joy Behar added. “Give me a break.”
Behar went on to say, “If they had done the wedding at McDonald’s, maybe he would go,” making a jab at the president’s love of the fast food chain.
Alyssa Farah-Griffin put in her two cents, which quickly turned into an on-air blunder as she said: “A parent should try to never miss their child's funeral.”
She then looked stunned as the audience gasped before quickly correcting herself, saying, “I’m sorry, oh God, wedding! Honestly, I'm so tired, I have a 3-month-old.”
Whoopi Goldberg then suggested that Trump would have showed up to support his son if Trump Jr. had held his wedding at the $400 million White House ballroom that is currently under construction.
Her co-hosts responded with circulating rumors that the newlyweds had asked to hold their wedding ceremony at the White House but were turned down because of the war between Iran and the United States. Goldberg then responded: “See?! If you had built a ballroom they could’ve gotten married there. That’s the kind of person you are!”
When approached for comment, representatives for the White House directed The Independent to a recent Truth Social from Trump saying that he could not attend the wedding because “circumstances pertaining to Government, and my love for the United States of America, do not allow me to do so.”
He wrote: “I feel it is important for me to remain in Washington, D.C., at the White House during this important period of time. Congratulations to Don and Bettina!”
