- The average floor area of homes in England has seen a slight increase over the past decade, rising from 95.3 square metres in 2013 to 96.2 square metres in 2023.
- While flats and detached homes have decreased in size, bungalows, terraced houses, and semi-detached properties have typically grown larger during the same period.
- Terraced houses experienced the most significant increase in size, becoming 3.6 per cent bigger on average, whereas flats are now 1.7 per cent smaller at 60.3 square metres.
- Owner-occupied properties boast the largest average floor area at 112 square metres, significantly larger than homes in the private rented (76 square metres) and social rented (65 square metres) sectors.
- This data, compiled by Nationwide Building Society from the English Housing Survey, also indicates that England's total housing stock grew by 2.1 million homes to 25.4 million by 2023.
