What are the two votes in the Scottish Election 2021

Scots have been taking to the polls throughout today to select their representatives for the Scottish Parliament.

Millions of voters are expected to pile into polling stations across the country to play their democratic role in shaping Holyrood for the next five years.

Many Scots will be waiting until after the working day is completed to hand in their vote before the 10pm deadline tonight.

But with voting systems changing with most elections, it is always good to know what voters are in for before they head out.

All Scots will receive two ballot papers - one coloured purple and the other in peach.

The purple paper is the constituency ballot, where you have your chance to vote for a particular candidate up for election in the area.

The paper in peach is the regional list ballot, where you mark for the political party you wish to stand up for your region.

A total of 129 seats are up for grabs at this year’s election - with 73 constituency MSPs and 56 regional MSPs taking their place at Scottish Parliament at the end of it.

The regions are: Central Scotland, Glasgow, Highlands and Islands, Lothian, Mid-Scotland and Fife, North East Scotland, South Scotland and West Scotland.

Each region will have seven MSPs, this means voters will be represented by eight parliamentarians.

Scots should mark their choice with a cross (X) on the box that is opposite their chosen candidate or political party.

People who registered to vote on or before April 19 will be eligible to participate in the vote.

Anyone who managed to get their registration in on time should have some form of receipt, which generally comes in the way of a polling card.

The polling card will give details of the name of the person registered, their address and polling station they are designated to vote at.

Polling stations are open now and will remain so until 10pm this evening.
