The two groups that will be eligible for new 50% discount on public transport in Budget 2022

Public transportation will become much cheaper for two groups of people in Ireland in Budget 2022, it has been reported.

The government is set to announce the new scheme for students at all levels, including those attending third-level institutions under the age of 24.

As well as students, young workers under the recommended age bracket will also be able to avail of the 50% discount on travel fare.

According to the Irish Independent, the drop in costs for young people is being made in the hopes that they will return to public transport and put off buying a private car in the future.

There will be no exceptions to the discount, meaning that it will apply across all means of public transport, where a Leap Card can be used.

Those under 24 will be able to avail of the discount at any time of day, seven days a week - it will only come to a close on the eve of a person’s 24th birthday.

In order to get the new Leap Card, the public will have to apply through the National Transport Authority with acceptable proof of date of birth.

However, these applications will likely move online for ease of access.

Full details of the new plan will be revealed in this afternoon’s Budget announcement, which commences in the Dail at 1:00 pm today.

RTE will begin their coverage from 12.40 pm and will be live on-air until 5.45 pm, with David McCullagh and Sharon Tobin presenting live coverage and analysis.

Additionally, you can tune into RTE Radio’s News at One for an extended show hosted by Bryan Dobson. He will be joined by a number of guests to break down all of the major details confirmed in the Budget.
