The truth behind Kylian Mbappe's social media activity and the Liverpool transfer frenzy

Liverpool fans went into a Kylian Mbappe transfer frenzy over the weekend following some interesting social media activity.

Journalist Paul Joyce got the ball rolling as he retweeted a video Mbappe shared to Twitter.

The 20-year-old superstar also posed with NBA legend LeBron James who own shares in the Reds leading to more speculation he could join Liverpool.

If this wasn't enough to get fans dreaming of the World Cup winner lining up alongside Jordan Henderson and company next season, some supporters spotted something interesting on Mbappe's Instagram.

The Paris Saint-Germain striker is following just 250 people on the picture and video sharing app, and among those are some high profile Liverpool players past and present.

Mohamed Salah and Fabinho are both followed by Mbappe, while the Ligue 1 champion also follows Steven Gerrard and Philippe Coutinho.

This too sent fans into overdrive but there is a simple explanation.

Of course the forward is just following fellow professionals but there is another reason fans may have seen the likes of Salah and Fabinho's names at the top of the list.

It was not because Mbappe had recently followed them it was instead because of Instagram's algorithm.

When you click to see who a person is following the list of users that comes up will be made up of accounts you are following.

And with most Liverpool fans following accounts such as that of Gerrard, this then explains why fans thought Mbappe had recently followed stars.

When in actual fact the ex-Monaco man had been following the players, including former team-mate Fabinho, for some time.
