Michael Mohammed Ahmad’s memoir The Tribe was adapted for the Sydney Festival stage and presented by Urban Theatre Projects in 2015. Now Belvoir will bring the play from the streets of Sydney’s west to backyards across Surry Hills.
Hazem Shammas plays Bani, a small boy finding his way in a young country by recounting his grandmother’s tales of an old country. Among the Hills Hoists, paling fencing, frangipanis and jasmine of the Sydney yards, he tells stories of ‘The Tribe’, a small Muslim sect who fled to Australia from Lebanon.
