The Trailer For Legally Blonde’s Prequel Series Elle Has Arrived & Wait, It Actually Looks Good

Sequels, prequels, spinoffs and reboots of beloved nostalgic films and TV shows are known for being hit or miss, with fans often left asking the same question: why?

While some manage to modernise the original source material for new audiences (like Heartbreak High) or expand upon beloved characters and storylines (like The Hunger Games prequels), others simply confuse fans and add little value (I’m looking at you, Mean Girls). Many reboots also fail to make it off the ground, with Lizzie McGuire, Buffy and Clueless all being sadly cancelled.

The latest prequel to get the green light is a spinoff of Legally Blonde in the form of a TV show, and before you freak out about your fave 2000s flick getting ruined, the trailer actually looks pretty good.

What is the Legally Blonde TV show about?

Titled Elle, the Prime Video series serves as a prequel to the OG film and follows a teenage Elle Woods during her high school years in 1995 — long before she became a Harvard law student.

The trailer promises a classic “fish-out-of-water” premise, with Elle forced to move with her parents from her sun-soaked life in Bel-Air to gloomy Seattle.

Following the release of the trailer, fans have commented on X (formerly known as Twitter) that they’re pleasantly surprised by how great the show looks.

“Obviously was expecting slop, but this doesn’t even look that bad it looks cute,” one person wrote, while another added, “I’m so excited to see how her youth is portrayed as a huge fan”.

Others have questioned whether the prequel will change Elle’s backstory from the film, and if it is even a necessary addition to the Legally Blonde universe, but you can watch the trailer and decide for yourself:

Who’s involved in Elle?

Lexi Minetree takes on the iconic role from Reese Witherspoon, with June Diane Raphael and Tom Everett Scott playing her parents. James Van Der Beek also has a recurring role as Dean Wilson in what would be his final role before his death.

Although she doesn’t have an on-screen role, Reese is involved as an executive producer with her Hello Sunshine company, as well as legendary producer Marc Platt, whose company was responsible for the original film franchise.

Reese revealed in January 2025 that she was inspired to create a spinoff series after watching Netflix’s Wednesday, calling it an “amazing” high school show.

“I was like, ‘We should do Elle Woods in high school because I wanted to see who she was before college, before law school’,” she told The Hollywood Reporter. “And I started having all these ideas and these amazing writers came up with a great pitch and now Amazon is making the show and it’s called Elle.”

When does Elle premiere?

The new coming-of-age series is scheduled to premiere on July 1, 2026, on Prime Video.

Additionally, a second season of Elle has already been greenlit, with Never Have I Ever star Maitreyi Ramakrishnan set to join the cast. Huge!

So, you might be sceptical, but it seems like the streaming service has full confidence that the series will please OG fans. What, like it’s hard?
