The Tottenham Hotspur dilemma facing Frank Lampard at Chelsea next season

When the summer comes around, Frank Lampard will be looking to spend big money to take Chelsea closer to the top of the Premier League table.

The Blues did not bring anyone in during January, which has given their chances of a top four finish a bit of a knock.

Football right now is in a bit of an unknown and there is going to be no professional football in the UK until at least April 30.

The 2019/20 campaign does not have an official re-start date, while there is still set to be some clarification over when the transfer window might be opened.

Throwback to when Carlo Ancelotti named his team a day early

As for Chelsea, the summer transfer window is set to be a big one with the Blues wanting to bolster their ranks.

One of the main issues is going to be up front and adding to the attacking options.

Hakim Ziyech will be joining the squad on July 1, but Lampard will want more players to add to his forward line.

However, this summer there is going to be a real dilemma for Lampard and finding the right striker to be a foil for Tammy Abraham.

You only have to look to Chelsea’s London rivals in Tottenham Hotspur to see how hard it is to find a top quality back-up striker.

Spurs have a runaway lead striker in Harry Kane, who, when fit, will always start for Jose Mourinho’s team.

However, what has meant is that Spurs have struggled to get a player who can step in when needed and really lead the line.

Vincent Janssen and Fernando Llorente are two strikers who have failed to spark them, and never had the quality that Kane possesses.

Meanwhile, Heung-Min Son and Lucas Moura have been used to fill in the position when Kane is not around.

And this summer, Lampard is facing a similar dilemma with Chelsea and Abraham.

It appears that Abraham is the long-term answer to the problem up front for Chelsea, but who should be on the bench?

Olivier Giroud has proved that he still has the quality to provide a real impact for the Blues, however his contract runs out in the summer.

Meanwhile, Michy Batshuayi is obviously not the answer for the Blues in terms of making the difference when Abraham is injured.

So who are the options for Lampard this summer?

It appears Timo Werner is on his way to Liverpool, and it is looking more likely that the Blues could aim for Moussa Dembele from Lyon.

But the difficulty for Lampard and Chelsea is trying to convince someone to come in and be a potential second fiddle to Abraham.

Spurs have certainly struggled.
