The Tottenham evening headlines as midfielder returns to training, latest on Man United fixture

Here are your Tottenham Hotspur evening headlines for Thursday, 12th March.

Sissoko returns to training

Moussa Sissoko has handed Jose Mourinho a timely boost by returning to first team training this week ahead of the weekend's game against Manchester United at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The Frenchman has been out of action since New Year's Day after suffering a knee injury during the defeat to Southampton - the same game in which Harry Kane suffered an injury setback.

But he is now closing in on a return to action.

And that was not the only good news.

Ben Davies also returned to training with the first team, having missed the games against Burnley and RB Leipzig with a hamstring problem.

Davinson Sanchez, who also missed the Leipzig clash, is also back in training.

Transfer battle for Red Bull Leipzig star

Tottenham and Arsenal are locked in a transfer battle for Red Bull Leipzig's Marcel Sabitzer.

That's according to CalcioMercato.

The Austrian is said to have caught the eye of the north London duo with an impressive 2019/2020 season thus far which has seen him score 15 times and weigh in with eight assists in 35 appearances across all competitions.

Sabitzer scored twice on Tuesday night to knock Spurs out of the Champions League, something which clearly made the club stand up and take notice.

Latest on Man United fixture

Tottenham's Premier League game against Manchester United is still scheduled to go ahead as planned on Sunday despite fears over the coronavirus.

With a number of Champions League and Europa League fixtures all being played behind closed doors, it has since been confirmed that football in La Liga has been suspended for at least two weeks.

Calls are now growing louder for the Premier League to come to a stop and many believe that it will indeed happen sooner rather than later.

Reports on Thursday claim that an emergency meeting of the Government's COBRA committee could well see the league taken behind closed doors at the very least.

It is also expected to officially announce that the UK had moved from the 'contain' phase of their coronavirus action plan to the 'delay’ phase, which could include social distancing measures.

As of Thursday afternoon, the Lilywhites' home match against Manchester United is still going ahead.

Why Premier League matches have not been suspended

The UK’s chief scientific advisor Sir Patrick Vallance has explained why Premier League and EFL matches have not been banned amid the spread of coronavirus.

The government announced on Thursday they were moving into the ‘delay’ phase of their plan to combat the outbreak but have not ordered for matches to be suspended, or for games to be played behind closed doors.

Elsewhere in Europe, similar action has already been taken for Italy’s Serie A and Spain’s La Liga, while both France’s Ligue 1 and Germany’s Bundesliga will be played behind closed doors.

However, while there is still a possibility that such action could be followed in the UK in the coming weeks, Vallance explained why this has not occurred yet.

"Of course there is a risk. [If] one individual is infected, you are releasing the virus from your body as you cough, sneeze or put fluids onto surfaces.

"But on average, one person infects two or three others. You therefore have a very low probability of infecting a large number of people in a stadium. Or a rather higher probability of infecting people very close to you."
