The three Irish counties furthest from lockdown exit as cases stay stubbornly high

Ireland is currently battling a persistent third wave of coronavirus infections as the entire country remains under a strict Level Five lockdown.

While almost every part of the country is seeing a significantly lower level of infections over the last few weeks, cases are staying stubbornly high in some areas.

And with government leaders saying that there will be no significant easing of restrictions until the level of infection reduces, some areas are further from a sustainably low number of cases than others.

One of the key measures used by health officials to determine the severity of outbreaks in a region is the 14-day incidence rate of confirmed cases per 100,000 population.

And by this metric Offaly is now the hardest-hit region in the country, with a rate of 402.8, far higher than the national average of 199.4.

This is followed by other midlands counties including Longford, on 379.2, and Westmeath, on 289.5.

In total 11 counties are still reporting an incidence higher than 200: Dublin, Limerick, Louth, Laois, Kildare, Galway, Meath and Mayo.

In slightly better news, some counties are seeing a very low level of cases, with Kerry reporting a staggeringly low rate of just 59.6.

They are followed by neighbours Cork on 61.2, and Kilkenny on 76.6.
