The Teacher: Sharon Rooney's impressive TV credits and Disney film debut

Sharon Rooney stars alongside Sheridan Smith and Kelvin Fletcher in Channel 5's latest drama series The Teacher.

The actress plays Nina, an English teacher at a Bradford school - who is also the mum of one of the students.

Her character is at odds with fellow educator Jenna (Sheridan Smith) and is secretly enjoying her downfall.

Jenna's life spirals out of control as accusations of a sex scandal at the school emerge.

But many will be wondering why Sharon Rooney, 33, looks so familiar and where they've seen her before.

Sharon, from Glasgow, Scotland, left school at the age of 16 to pursue acting.

She enrolled on to a performing arts course and went on to study drama at university in Hull.

She performed stand-up comedy before landing her break-out role as Rae Earl in the E4 series My Mad Fat Diary in 2013.

The role saw her nominated for Best Actress with the British Academy Scotland Awards twice as well as with the Royal Television Society once.

She scooped the British Academy Scotland Awards on her third nomination for Best Actress, reports Yorkshire Live.

Aside from My Mad Fat Diary, Sharon has played many other roles across both film and television.

She appeared in an episode of BBC's Sherlock, titled The Empty Hearse in 2014, alongside stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman.

The actress went on to star in TV comedy Brief Encounters, a series following four women who worked as Anne Summers party saleswomen.

She's also known for playing Sophie O'Neal in Scottish sitcom Two Doors Down and has had roles in Zapped and No Offence.

The star made her Disney film debut in 2019 with a part in the live-action adaptation of Dumbo.

The film was directed by Tim Burton and starred Colin Farrell, Michael Keaton and Danny DeVito.

Sharon played Miss Atlantis, a mermaid performer and sang the song 'Baby Mine' around a campfire while playing a ukulele.

More recently, in 2021, the Scottish actress played Nicola in the ITV comedy-drama Finding Alice, alongside Keeley Hawes and Joanna Lumley.
