While the whole world cringes at most of the Jeremiah Fisher scenes in The Summer I Turned Pretty‘s (TSITP) third and final season, actor Gavin Casalegno has reminded fans he’s just playing the part and that he’s not ~really~ Jere IRL.
As someone who admittedly follows TSITP through cheesey TikTok edits and discussion groups in the PEDESTRIAN.TV office, it’s no secret that everyone has a bone to pick with Jeremiah ‘Jere’ Fisher this season.
From cheating on Belly, to *that* engagement ring and that tanny over a dark chocolate cake with mirror glaze and raspberry coulis, the character has seemingly landed himself in everyone’s bad books.
In an interview with The New York Times, Jere’s actor, Gavin Casalegno, responded to the hate the character has been copping, reminding viewers that TSITP is a fictional story.
The Summer I Turned Pretty‘s Gavin Casalegno responds to Jeremiah Fisher hate
Speaking to The New York Times, Casalegno reflected on portraying one of the most hated fictional boyfriends out there and the rise of Team Conrad, played by Christopher Briney.
“They tend to dislike him, yes. I don’t check Instagram anymore, so I really haven’t seen that much hate,” the actor shared.
“The only thing that I see is my sister sending me the memes that are really funny. I think it’s important to also understand and realise that this is a fictional story — and it’s also not me.”

Casalegno also told the publication that he thought Amazon “did a good job” of trying to prevent any bullying, even though the Jere hate is quite strong.
Elsewhere in the interview, Casalegno admitted that he hasn’t watched much of the beloved series, stating that he already knows what’s happening because he starred in it.
“I honestly haven’t even really watched any of the show. Because, you know, when you’re in it, you know what’s happening. And so it’s like: why? At the end of the day, it’s work — it’s an amazing job, a dream job — but it is still work,” he shared.
Recently, Casalegno was embroiled in controversy after he starred in a Dunkin’ Donuts campaign that was accused of promoting eugenics.
“Look, I didn’t ask to be the king of summer. It just kind of happened,” Calaegno said in the ad.
“This tan? Genetics. I just got my colour analysis back. Guess what? Golden summer. Literally.”
Per The New York Times, Casalegno has “no idea” the campaign had copped such heat (as well as TSITP Jere hate) as he had been “off-grid in Thailand and Indonesia” with his wife, Cheyanne King.
We still have a couple of TSITP season three episodes left until the final one (which is slated for September 17) drops… so maybe Jere will redeem himself? Only time will tell, but I will be here for the TikTok deep dives and edits.
