The story of ‘earvolution’: from ceremonial piercings to fashion-statement earbuds

When we are born, a cry can let the world know that we are healthy and OK. When we first begin to talk, we learn to express our needs and understand the needs of others. As we grow older, we learn that the sound of a siren denotes danger, that certain notes swelling together create the sound of a favourite song which lifts our spirits, or that a warm familiar voice on the other end of the phone means our best friend has our back.

Our ears give us grounding and clues: they are our maps of the world, guiding us towards truth, keeping us from harm, giving us a constant stream of sensory information.

So it makes sense that humans have been highlighting this particular part of their anatomies for millennia. The power of the ear, as a portal through which good and bad could traverse was something that was clocked by ancient cultures who believed that evil spirits could enter through the ear canals. Metal earrings were thought to repel the malevolent forces.

In other cultures, ceremonial ear piercing would mark a rite of passage – such as coming of age or the ascension of a person to a particular status in the community. In some belief systems, certain parts of the outer ear were believed to be connected to other organs. And by piercing those parts of the ear it would lead to healing in the body. Meanwhile sailors wore gold loops in their ears as a sort of maritime life insurance, making sure they would get a respectful burial if they washed up ashore after being lost at sea. When the church banned the practice of ear piercing in the 13th century, it became subversive.

Of course, in different times, the wearing of ear jewellery also indicated wealth in societies, with gold and gemstones being worn to indicate status.

Currently, there are trends for multiple piercings throughout the ear – an aesthetic flex that’s as much an act of quiet-fashion rebellion as it is a visual insight into your unique style.

But there’s a revolution happening in ear adornments too. The act of listening has become increasingly crucial in today’s age of digital audio experiences, podcasts, personal assistants – as well as the need to maintain human connection and situational awareness as we move through our hybrid digital-IRL worlds.

We spend a great deal of time ingesting information through our ears, whether that’s having conversations with colleagues, listening to content or checking out a new band recommended by a trusted friend.

We spend so much of our waking day “plugged in” that it is increasingly important that our wearables work for us, mirroring our lifestyles. In this attention economy, we’re multi-tasking audio information the whole time so it’s important to have earbuds that meet us where our real lived experience is. Our listening habits – how we listen and what we listen to – are reflected through what we are listening on.

In 2023, Huawei changed the wearable tech game with its HUAWEI FreeClip: an open-ear earbud that clipped around the middle of the ear, resting outside a person’s ear canal in contrast with in-ear earbuds – marking a new stage in the history of ear adornments.

So lightweight and comfortable you forget you are wearing them, they offer crisp and clear audio that allows you to converse with ease. Now Huawei is launching a new iteration: the HUAWEI FreeClip 2, which elevates fashion, functionality, design nous and audio excellence even further.

Audio wise, the HUAWEI FreeClip 2 has had a multifaceted upgrade. The bass has improved thanks to a dual-diaphragm driver, offering a deeper low-end sound and more elasticity and richness in the lower frequencies, giving you more sonic details in the music you love. There are also “smart” features, where the buds automatically adjust the volume to match your surroundings, from a busy commuter train to your office. Not only that, the vocal content of what you’re listening to is then enhanced so the delivery is as audio perfect as can be.

And if you are taking an important call while you are listening to a new audiobook, you don’t have to worry about levels. The earbuds contain an advanced noise cancellation system that will kick in. It also identifies ambient noise in public spaces, so you will be able to be heard clearly and plainly even if you are in the middle of a busy coffee shop or restaurant.

With their hybrid ear-cuff design, the HUAWEI FreeClip 2 will be loved by the fashion set. The buds come in a range of colour schemes (black, white and blue, with rose-gold coming soon) and the blue and white editions feature a charging case with a denim texture produced through high-precision infrared scanning of real denim fabric. They’re also dust and water resistant, so they’re ready for any change in season (weather and fashion wise!).

The fashion set will also love that Huawei has announced its partnership with French jewellery designer, Les Néréides, which has created a series of three stylish, FreeClip 2 clip-on accessories which mirror the brands iconic pieces, so you can accessorise your tech with a perfect blend of tech and fashion.

Ergonomically, the HUAWEI FreeClip 2 is made with skin-friendly silicon and a shape-memory alloy, which enables it to hold its “C” shape while remaining flexible. The effortless fit makes the buds ideal for active users who want to incorporate them into their exercise activities such as running, yoga or dancing. Weighing just 5.1 grams, the earbuds themselves are also lighter than the first generation.

And don’t worry about running out of juice, the design team is on top of that too. Fast wireless charging offers three hours of playback after only a 10-minute charge, and you get nine hours of continuous playback after a full charge (38 hours with a fully charged charging case).

The HUAWEI FreeClip 2 is the next stage of human “earvolution” and we’re here for it.
