Katie Taylor is set to go toe to toe with Amanda Serrano in the ring this weekend in a historical fight in New York's Madison Square Garden.

The Bray, Co Wicklow native will be defending her undisputed lightweight crown against the Puerto Rican Serrano on Saturday night.

The bout has been regarded as one of the most anticipated fights in women's boxing history, with the athlete's pay to match the hype.

Jake Paul, whose promotion company Most Valuable Promotions Serrano fights for, told TMZ that both boxing stars would make over $1 million (€945,500) in what he called the "biggest fight of the year".

Speaking about the fight, he said: "The history that this is making. First time women have ever headlined Madison Square Garden, which is massive, and two of the pound-for-pound best going at it. This is what boxing needs more of. I am counting down the days."

Two of the most well-known boxers in the women's game, the fighters have been on a collision course for years.

Serrano (42-1-1) hasn't lost since 2012 and is on a 28 fight winning streak. While Taylor (20-0-0) has risen to the top of the women's game quickly.

Taylor has been revolutionary for the sport, having taken just six years from making her professional debut to headlining the biggest card in the history of women's boxing.

DAZN's official Twitter account commented on the historic nature of the fight.

"For one of the biggest fights ever"

"For the first women to headline The Garden"

"For two icons changing the sport of boxing. Katie Taylor vs Amanda Serrano"

"It's for history"

To mark the unbelievable occasion, the iconic Empire State Building will be lit up in the colours of Ireland and Puerto Rico in honour of the two legends of women's boxing.

Speaking ahead of the fight, Taylor said: "This is just a special occasion for me to headline a huge fight like this at Madison Square Garden. It's being billed as the biggest fight in female boxing history. This is just incredible and a real privilege for me.

"I love being involved in these kinds of fights. These are the challenges that I've always wanted. I don't think I've ever backed down from any challenge. I've wanted to face the very best.

"Amanda Serrano is a fantastic fighter, she's a great champion, and she's not here for no reason. She deserves this opportunity as well. She's been pioneering her own way, and that's why this fight is the best in female boxing history. We have champion versus champion. The best versus the best, and this is why this fight is so special."

The fight will be broadcast live on DAZN.
