The Sri Lankan street food buffet where kids eat free

A restaurant in Redland with monthly buffets is offering free food to children under 10. The Sri Lankan restaurant just off Gloucester Road, Kottu Hut has been open for just over a year and started offering an all-you-can eat buffet a few months ago.

But now the buffet is restricted to the last Sunday of the month and - depending on its success - will either be stopped altogether or held more regularly. The owner, Chamara, who is also a chef, began selling Kottu Roti’s from a truck 17 years ago. Kottu roti is a Sri Lankan street food consisting of a flat bread filled with meat or vegetarian curry and is what the restaurant is most known for.

The buffet itself has more than 20 dishes to choose from, including cashew nut curry, aubergine fry and lotus root. There are meat, fish and vegan options available at the buffet, which is £20 per person.

The restaurant prides itself on serving authentic cuisine and as a result is popular with the local Sri Lankan community. Some of the savoury dishes are surprisingly sweet with pineapple, mango and ring donuts all being features of the buffet.

Coconut milk is heavily featured in the food although a fair amount of the food is spicy. Many of the dish names are written in Sinhalese which alongside Tamil, is the main language spoken in the tropical Island off the south coast of India.

The traditional Sri Lankan soft drink, wood apple juice which is a combination of coconut, sugar and wood apple; a tropical fruit native to south Asia is on the menu for £4. Alongside canned soft drinks, the restaurant serves mango lassis and faloodas, a cold dessert made with noodles.

Kottu Hut is also open to bookings for private catering and has an outdoor seating area. The restaurant is open daily from 3-10pm and the next buffet is on Sunday, July 30.

Kottu Hut is at 31A Zetland Road, Cotham, Bristol BS6 7AH.
