The SMRC eSports Spring Championship creates a real buzz

THE Scottish Motor Racing Club’s new eSports Spring Championship’s opening round drew a massive number of competitors and resulted in thrilling virtual track action.

So many drivers applied across PS4, XBox and PC platforms that qualifying heats had to be staged over three days ahead of the championship’s opening round.

It featured Formula Rookie cars (the Project CARS 2 equivalent to Formula Ford 1600s) completing two races around a virtual Knockhill Racing Circuit on the respective games consoles.

The PS4 action saw Sam McKenzie carve his way through the field to take the win in Race 1. The second encounter saw some dramatic close-quarters racing and rivals hunting each other down, with Michael Weddell emerging victorious.

Ayden Wilson enjoyed an emphatic six-second win in the opening Xbox encounter and followed that up with an even greater margin of victory – 13 seconds – in Race 2.

The PC sim racers finished off the round, with Lorenzo Turri winning a nail-biting first race and Craig Lax making up for a costly mistake in the opener to claim victory in the second race.

Round 2 features competitors in the Renault Clio Cup tackling the virtual Oulton Park this Sunday. You can watch the action on the SMRC Facebook page or go to www.smrc.co.uk to find out more.
