The sexual division of leisure

Girls are not only outperforming boys in the classroom but are also, writes Debbie Andalo, more inclined than them to separate work and play.

Nearly half of the girls - 42% - questioned in a survey of teenagers published yesterday like to spend the long school break hanging out with friends, while only 15% report they like to earn money working during the holidays.

Boys, on the other hand, are more likely to spend their free time working, with 25% saying that is how they plan to spend their summer holidays this year, according to the survey of 631 teenagers carried out by the website LunarStorm.

Eighteen per cent of the girls said they intend to sit in front of the computer, compared to just 11% of teenage boys.

Girls are also twice as likely to spend time watching television this summer compared to the boys, the survey revealed.

What happens to all that industriousness, then, when boys get back into the classroom?
