The security area at Newcastle Airport is now under renovation - here is how it's expected to look

These images show how the security area at Newcastle Airport will look following a major renovation.

The airport started work on a redevelopment of its security area on Monday. As part of the project, new equipment and technology will be installed and the capacity of the area will increase.

During 2022, 98% of the airport's passengers passed through security in less than six minutes. Newcastle Airport said the upgrade will help to ensure they can maintain these queue times in the future.

There will be a transformational change to the aesthetics, with new tiled floors and natural finishes to walls and ceilings. There will also be enhanced lighting and better heating and ventilation for passenger and staff comfort.

The redevelopment will be implemented in two phases to minimise disruption.

Phase one, which began on October 24, will be complete by Easter 2023. The capacity of the area in summer 2023 will ensure the airport can maintain less than six minute queue times.

Newcastle Airport will move onto phase two during the winter of 2023 - 2024. The entire project is expected be completed by Easter 2024.

Nick Jones, Chief Executive of Newcastle International Airport said: "We are delighted to be starting this exciting security upgrade to enhance the passenger experience at the airport. The project will see a transformational change to the area and enable the team to operate with the latest equipment. Although a complex project,

"I am confident that whilst the works are ongoing passengers will still be able to travel swiftly through security and onto their flight."
