The Secret Netflix: Killer dentist Colin Howell snubbed first hit TV drama

Killer dentist Colin Howell is reported to have snubbed the 2016 television drama depicting his heinous crimes and even if he now wants to, he has no access to Netflix in prison.

Millions were gripped by The Secret when it aired in 2016, the story based on the murder pact between self-proclaimed Christian dentist Howell and nursery teacher Hazel Stewart who killed their spouses.

Howell’s solicitor, Adrian Harvey, told Belfast Live his client did not watch the series.

He said: “Just to clarify the position my client, Colin Howell, has not been watching ‘The Secret’.”

The lawyer spoke out after prison sources previously claimed Howell had been following the show on a small television set in his cell at the high-security Maghaberry jail.

On the night of 18 to 19 May 1991 – his son’s second birthday – Howell gassed his wife Lesley, 31, and dumped her in the boot of his estate car.

After driving past a police patrol, he arrived at the home of Mr Buchanan.

Howell then gassed and throttled Mr Buchanan, 33, with the help of his blonde lover.

Earlier on Friday it was claimed the children of one of the victims of the 1991 double murder were not given a preview the drama.

The claim was made by David Stewart who is now married to Hazel Stewart.

Mr Stewart said the Buchanan children were not given an opportunity by ITV to view the drama before it went to air.

Earlier this week Prime Minister David Cameron weighed into controversy surrounding the show.

Colin and Lesley Howell’s daughter, Lauren Bradford, contacted Labour MP Louise Haigh about the depiction of the murders of her mother Lesley and policeman Trevor Buchanan.

A spokeswoman for the broadcaster said: “ITV has received a very small number of complaints about the series which is no more than any other drama. The remaining two episodes of The Secret [were] screened as scheduled and the series [featured] as planned on catch up services.”
