The rise in million-pound flats in Bristol

A dozen flats and apartments have sold for more than £1million in Bristol during the past five years - revealing the boom of 'mega-flats in the city.

This figure, released from the Land Registry, compares to just two sold during the 14 years leading up to 2014.

Exclusive data shows between 2000 and 2014, only two flats or apartments in Bristol sold for more than £1million.

But between 2015 and the middle of 2019, a staggering 12 of them were purchased.

They included a record £2.5million sale of an apartment in Royal York Crescent, in Clifton, in 2018.

Other buildings which have seen seven-figure sales include Bridge House in Sion Place, St Vincents Rocks, North Contemporis, and Litfield Court.

With property prices continuing to rise, space at a premium and more interest than ever in town- and city-centre living, it isn’t just Bristol that has caught the “mega-flat” bug.

What's happening across the UK?

Across England and Wales as a whole, some 2,770 flats and apartments sold for seven-figure sums between 2000 and 2004.

That rose to 5,445 between 2005 and 2009, 12,091 between 2010 and 2014 - and then 19,703 between 2015 and 2019.

Unsurprisingly, London continues to account for the vast majority of million-pound flats - but the proportion has fallen slightly as other places catch up.

Between 2000 and 2004, the capital accounted for 2,707 of the 2,770 seven-figure flat sales, or roughly 98 per cent.

Between 2015 and 2019, it accounted for 18,981 out of 19,703 - or 96 per cent.

Windsor and Maidenhead in Berkshire saw the most million-plus sales outside London, with 100 between 2015 and 2019.
