The results Japan, Scotland and Ireland want and need in Rugby World Cup Pool A decider

After the typhoon comes the rugby, with Japan and Scotland facing judgement day at the Rugby World Cup.

Only one of the two teams can join Ireland in the quarter-finals and things could get complicated.

You can follow live updates here.

The Pool A situation

Scotland enter the match four points adrift of Japan who are currently on 14 points, two behind Pool leaders Ireland who have completed their fixtures.

A Japan win, or a draw, or even two losing bonus points would see them top the group and play South Africa in the quarter-finals. That would mean Ireland facing New Zealand in the last eight.

Scotland have to win but need to get four more match points than Japan to finish second. They can't catch Ireland at the top of the group.

So, if Japan pick up one bonus point in defeat, Scotland will have to secure a winning bonus point of their own by scoring four tries or more.

That would leave the Scots and Japanese level on points but Scotland would go through as they would have won the head to head encounter between the two sides.

If Japan get two bonus points (by losing by seven points or less and scoring four tries) then Scotland are out no matter what.

In summary

If Japan win: Japan top the group and play South Africa in the quarter-finals. Ireland would play the All Blacks.

If Scotland win and Japan don't get a bonus point: Ireland top the group, Scotland are second and Japan are out

If Scotland win and Japan get a bonus point: Ireland are top and Japan are second

If Scotland win with a bonus point and Japan get a bonus point: Ireland are top, Scotland second

If Scotland win with a bonus point and Japan get two losing bonus points: Japan top the group and Ireland are second

If it's a draw: Japan finish top and Ireland are second
