The reason Thomas Lemar was absent from Atletico Madrid training amid talk of Arsenal transfer

Six days remain until the January transfer window closes.

The future of Thomas Lemar should be resolved by next week as the Atletico Madrid winger continues to be linked with a move to Arsenal after falling out of favour under Diego Simeone in the Spanish capital.

Latest reports coming out of Spain are rather contrasting to say the least.

Marca state that "all roads lead to Arsenal" in regards to Lemar's future, who "has to leave Atletico" so that Simeone can free up wage space to sign a striker.

Furthermore, the La Liga giants will apparently recover "a good part" of the €72m (£60.7m) they paid out for the winger in 2017, but they are aware that the French star has not fully impressed at the Wanda Metropolitano and so are unlikely to get that full fee back.

In addition, El Golazo De Gol claim Lemar is close to joining the Gunners for €40m (£33m).

However, RMC Sport (via Get French Football News), state that while Arsenal and Atletico Madrid are in contact over the player, a deal between the parties is 'nowhere near'.

The report also says that there has been contact between Arsenal and Lemar, but equally a deal is not yet near to being agreed between the Gunners and the player.

Amid all the speculation, Lemar was a notable absentee from Atletico Madrid's training session ahead their La Liga clash against Leganes on Sunday and the official word is that the Frenchman is suffering with Gastroenteritis.

Furthermore, it would appear that Simeone wouldn't stand in the way of Lemar leaving this month after blasting the player's performances ever since his £57m transfer.

"The facts speak for themselves, better than words," Simeone said, as per Get Football News France. "It is certain that he has not been able to show all his qualities.

"Each time that he has been available, I have tried to play him. I have always been enthusiastic about his qualities as a player.

"He has not met the expectations set for him, but we have always had the same expectations.

"Today, who is to know if he will stay or not… His representatives are working hard. The clubs, they, operate on what they need."
