The reason Bryan Gil and Oliver Skipp are not named in Tottenham’s Premier League squad

Tottenham Hotspur unveiled their 25-man squad for the 2021/22 Premier League season on Friday evening.

Many of the usual names were included and probably the most welcome was that of Harry Kane after the England captain elected to remain in north London amid a failed move to Manchester City.

The vast majority of the club’s new signings have also inevitably been included as Nuno Espirito Santo finally has the fully confirmed squad to choose from until January at least.

Despite that, Spurs may have been slightly concerned to see a couple of names not appear on the initial list - those of Oliver Skipp and Bryan Gil.

The former has enjoyed an excellent start to the season since returning from his loan spell at Norwich City. Meanwhile, the latter was signed at great expense from Sevilla and has already shown glimpses of his immense promise in a Tottenham shirt.

The reason for their respective omissions is not an administrative error though, and has been done intentionally.

Whilst clubs in the Premier League are only permitted to name 25 players in their squad, the ruling allows them to name as many Under-21 players as they desire.

So, with both Gil and Skipp under that age, they have been named on the secondary list in order to save space in Spurs' primary 25-man squad.

Other notable names in the club’s Under-21 list include Dane Scarlett, summer signing Pape Matar Sarr, who has rejoined Metz on loan, Troy Parrott and Alfie Devine.

In all, Nuno Espirito Santo has named 55 youngsters in his squad, who could all potentially play a part in Spurs’ 2021/22 Premier League campaign at some point throughout the season.

The next chance that the club have to alter their current squad list is in January during the winter transfer window.
