The Rangers quality Andy Halliday has that makes new contract a no-brainer

Former Rangers defender Alan Hutton insists Andy Halliday deserves a new deal at Ibrox because of his passion for the club.

The versatile midfielder has struggled for game time this season, making 12 appearances in all competition this season with Borna Barisic cementing the left back position.

His last appearance came in the 2-2 draw with St Johnstone when he was hooked at half time in favour of putting Joe Aribo in an unusual left back position as Rangers chased the game.

Steven Gerrard has spoken regularly about how vital Halliday is to the dressing room over his 18 months in charge.

And Hutton insists the former Livingston youngster should be handed an extension to his contract because Rangers always need players who 'get' what the club means.

He told FootballInsider: "Andy Halliday’s out of contract, will they keep him in? He seems to be favoured at left-back with Barisic.

“I would hand him a new deal. I think he knows what it’s all about to play for Rangers. Whenever he’s been called on he’s done a job, whether it be at left-back – it can be difficult for players to be shifted about.

“I think he has, over the period of time, done well when he’s filled in. These are the sort of players that you need.

“I’ve spoke a million times about players with experience who know how to fight, work hard, knows what the fans want, puts in 100 per cent every time – these are the kind of guys you need in your squad. If it was up to me, I would definitely hand him something.”
