The poignant film made by Welsh stage school students all over the country during lockdown for Black Lives Matter

Students at a Wales-founded stage school have come together to create a moving video to bring awareness to the Black Lives Matter movement.

The Mark Jermin Stage School first started in Swansea and now has an English brand called Stage & Screen.

The company's students from across the UK together made a short film of Maya Angelou’s iconic poem, Equality, during #blackouttuesday on Tuesday, June 2.

The students each read out elements of the poem from their homes, before it was compiled together into a longer piece.

One student read out part of the poem in Welsh.

It comes just weeks after the students made an adorable video thanking the NHS for their work.

The Black Lives Matter movement gained recent momentum following the death of George Floyd in police custody in America.

Mr Floyd, an unarmed black man, died after a police officer knelt on his neck for more than nine minutes as he told them "I can't breathe".

The incident took place in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on Monday, May 25 after police officers arrested him on suspicion of using a counterfeit $20 note in a store.

Following this, #blackouttuesday came into fruition to get people silent on social media to reflect on the recent events and to stand in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement.

Founder of the stage school, Mark Jermin, said: "I’m so proud of our students - we have fostered an fiercely equal opportunities environment for many decades in our schools, and we are proudly diverse in all respects - be it ethnicity, class, gender - we welcome everyone from all backgrounds.

"We are interested in expanding our diversity - we are open to applications from disabled and special needs students, and of course we are proud LGBTQ+ ambassadors in Wales, as producers of Swansea Pride."

Stuart Piper, Talent Coach on the course, said, “We have been profoundly moved by the recent news, and we are so very proud of the students for using their voices to spread this strong message”.
