The player Mauricio Pochettino and Spurs may need more than they actually realise

Mauricio Pochettino is expected to ring the changes when Spurs return to Premier League action at Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday.

It has not been a good few days for the club following that disastrous night against Bayern Munich and they now must end the week on a high on the south coast.

With the manager definitely having to make at least one change as Serge Aurier is suspended, a few other switches here and there are expected to happen.

Pochettino's comments in his pre-match press conference seem to indicate that Moussa Sissoko will start at right-back, thus meaning there will be a spot up for grabs in the middle of the park.

As Harry Winks or Tanguy Ndombele could potentially drop down to the bench to freshen things up, that may see Eric Dier handed a rare opportunity in the team.

A key figure for the Argentine ever since his move from Sporting CP five years ago, 2019 has been a year to forget for the player so far.

A combination of injury and illness has limited the 25-year-old to only 15 appearances for both club and country since the turn of the year, with quite a few of those coming from the substitutes' bench.

Keen to put things right and hit the ground running in the summer, Dier decided to return to pre-season training early even though he had extra time off due to his international commitments but he suffered a further setback on his first day back at Hotspur Way

An issue detected during routine medical assessments ended with him going under the knife and he subsequently missed all five of the club's pre-season games.

In a summer where he had to make an instant impression after his previous troubles, it was the last thing he needed.

Although he has been named in Pochettino's squad on a regular basis since August, Dier has only played in two games and has a total of 102 minutes of football under his belt.

Not only has he lost his place in both the Tottenham and England team in recent months, his lack of football has seen him miss out on the Three Lions squad completely for the first two international breaks of the new season.

Spurs' disappointing start to the season both in the league and in Europe has led to fans calling for him to be brought back into the team, and those calls only went up a notch or two on Tuesday evening as Bayern went through the home team with ease in the second half to net five times.

It was a game crying out for him.

A no frills player who gets the job done and is effective, Dier would add a defensive shield in front of the back four that was sadly missing in midweek and has been for a number of games since the campaign got underway.

Now you could argue that Spurs could get away without starting the versatile player on Saturday against Brighton given their poor start to the season, but Dier would do the dirty work in midfield, add some much-needed bite and give the team a solid base to build from.

Many have complained over the past few years about what exactly he brings to the team, yet it may now be rather obvious given the team's frustrating start to a season that much promised so much two months ago.

Spurs and Pochettino may need Dier a lot more than they realise.
