The Open 2019: Watch as Royal Portrush crowd erupts for Darren Clarke on first tee

The 148th Open Championship got underway early on Thursday morning.

The early-morning sunshine pierced the cloudy skies over the famous Dunluce Links course, with thousands of fans braving the early chill to watch home favourite Darren Clarke hit the first shot.

It was an emotional moment for the 2011 winner, who owns a house overlooking the course, as he was welcomed on the first tee to huge cheers.

The 50-year-old has missed the cut in three of the last four years but, after sharing a few words with victorious Ryder Cup captain Thomas Bjorn just before his 6.35am start time, found the fairway with his drive down the right-hand side.

And as you can see here, it led to more loud roars from the gallery.

And it turned into a steady opening round for Clarke who shot an even par 71 despite dropping two shots in the final three holes.
