The only way Chelsea will complete midfielder signing as Atletico consider Saul Niguez transfer

Chelsea are yet to decide whether or not they want to sign a midfielder this summer transfer window, according to reports.

football.london understand that unless an opportunity that is too good to refuse presents itself to the Blues, a midfield signing is unlikely, whilst a move for a defender in Jules Kounde could be on the cards, especially if Kurt Zouma leaves.

The Blues already have a wealth of talent in the position, and duo N’Golo Kante and Jorginho were even named in the three-man shortlist for the UEFA Player of the Year this week, alongside Manchester City creative, Kevin De Bruyne.

Nevertheless, Chelsea have been linked with a number of names throughout this summer’s transfer window, including Declan Rice and more recently, Aurelien Tchouameni, who is also a target of Manchester United.

Still, no deal is close yet, and according to Italian transfers expert, Fabrizio Romano, the club still haven’t decided on whether they actually want to sign a midfielder.

“Chelsea will decide in the next few days whether to buy a new midfielder or not,” said Romano on Twitter.

Another name the club have been linked with is Saul Niguez.

The Blues interest has been well-broadcast, but they face competition from the likes of Liverpool and Barcelona.

It had previously been reported that the Catalan giants were attempting to negotiate a swap deal with Atleti in a switch that would see Saul arrive at the Camp Nou, with former Rojiblanco forward Antoine Griezmann set to move in the opposite direction.

However, Romano reports that there is nothing in the works yet, and Atletico themselves are unsure as to whether they want to sell the Spaniard.

“Keeping an eye on Saul Niguez, he’s considered ‘a possibility’ – not advanced yet,” he added. “Atletico Madrid will decide soon about Saul’s future.”

There is still time to get deals done, but with less than two weeks to go before deadline day, Chelsea will have to get a move on if they wish to get this one over the line.
