The one Welshman named in Will Greenwood's English Premiership team of the decade

With 2019 over and 2020 here, many have taken it upon themselves to reflect on the decade that has just been.

In the rugby world, that meant drawing up teams of the decade from different teams, competitions and countries.

For World Cup winner and Sky Sports pundit Will Greenwood, his task was picking the best XV from 10 years in the English Premiership for his column in the Telegraph .

Unsurprisingly, there were plenty of England internationals included - with Chris Ashton, Manu Tuilagi and Chris Robshaw just a handful of Test stars to feature.

But there was room for one Wales international. But it was someone much more unheralded than George North or Ross Moriarty.

Greenwood's only Welsh inclusion was Exeter Chiefs' prop Tomas Francis - with the Wales tight-head getting the nod over England and Leicester Tigers' front-rower Dan Cole.

When you hear Greenwood's explanation, it's hard to argue with the 47-cap forward being included.

Justifying his tight-head selection, Greenwood wrote: "This was immensely difficult.

"Dan Cole started and finished the decade, but he was away with England too often.

"Exeter's rise through the ranks needed a rock at tighthead, and more often than not Francis was there as the anchor."

Francis joined the Chiefs in 2014 from London Scottish, with the club going from strength to strength in the years following - winning the Premiership in 2017.

In 2015, Francis won his first Wales cap ahead of the 2015 World Cup, going on to be a constant presence in Warren Gatland's side ever since.

He is, however, currently out after shoulder surgery and is set to miss the forthcoming Six Nations.

Will Greenwood's English Premiership team of the decade: 15. Mike Brown (Harlequins); 14. Chris Ashton (Northampton, Saracens and Sale), 13. Manu Tuilagi (Leicester Tigers), 12. Brad Barritt (Saracens), 11. Vereniki Goneva (Leicester, Newcastle and Harlequins); 10. Gareth Steenson (Exeter), 9. Joe Simpson (Wasps and Gloucester); 1. Alex Waller (Northampton), 2. Schalk Brits (Saracens), 3. Tomas Francis (Exeter), 4. Geoff Parling (Leicester and Exeter), 5. Bryn Evans (London Irish and Sale), 6. Mark Wilson (Newcastle and Sale), 7. Chris Robshaw (Harlequins), 8. Thomas Waldrom (Leicester and Exeter).
