Fans call Richard E Grant 'national treasure' as he pays tribute to late wife on The One Show

Film and TV star Richard E. Grant moved The One Show viewers when he appeared on the show to talk about his new book A Pocketful of Happiness, which is a memoir about losing his wife, Joan, to cancer. Many also branded the actor a "legend" and deemed him a national sweetheart.

Appearing on the show Richard chatted to Welsh presenter Alex Jones and former footballer turned presenter Jermaine Jenas about his book. He said: "Grief is like an abyss, you have to negotiate your way through it on a daily basis."

Richard explained why the book was called A Pocketful of Happiness as a couple of days before she died Joan told Richard that although he would be sad, he had to find a "pocketful of happiness" in each day. He said: "It has really been the mantra which we have lived since then." and described the book as a "love letter" to Joan.

Many fans found Richard's segment touching and branded him a legend on Twitter. One said: "Legend and dare I say National Treasure." another added: "Richard E Grant is just epic. Seems a genuinely great guy. National Treasure. #TheOneShow"

A third said: "Loved watching you on The One Show tonight you legend!!" and "Great to see you on The One Show Richard. What a genuine lovely man you are & I hope your book is a great success." A fifth said: "Definitely a legend! My darling husband died two years ago. And I am so comforted hearing your thoughts on this grief journey we’re on. Thank you. X"

Richard is best known for his roles in the films Withnail &I, The Iron Lady, Logan, and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. He has also starred in TV shows including Doctor Who, Downton Abbey, and recently in the Disney+ series Loki.
