The old Palace Hotel's landmark clock tower is changing AGAIN as Principal brand stripped

It's one of Manchester's most recognisable landmarks - but the old Palace Hotel clock tower is about to get yet another makeover.

The iconic structure was stripped of its red neon Palace sign in 2016 when the hotel was taken over by the Principal group.

Now it's set to change again as luxury hotel group Kimpton takes over the the striking Victorian building.

Eagle-eyed locals may have already spotted the white signage being lowered from the clock tower this morning, ready for the new Kimpton sign to be hoisted into place next month.

Although far from the tallest building in the city centre, the hotel's 66-metre-tall tower and its glowing sign can be seen from all the way down Oxford Street.

The gradual switch from Principal to Kimpton, which includes revamping much of the hotel's interior, is expected to be complete in mid-March.

Once the changeover is completed, the 270-room hotel will go by the name of Kimpton Clocktower Hotel.

It will be the fourth Kimpton hotel in the UK, joining those in London, Edinburgh and Glasgow.

General manager Peter Kienast commented on the upcoming re-brand: "Kimpton Clocktower Hotel is the latest addition to the growing global Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants brand.

"Each Kimpton hotel is an escape from the ordinary, and Kimpton Clocktower Hotel will offer a real ‘wow’ factor stay with a warm Mancunian welcome.

"We can’t wait for the people on Manchester to re-discover our beautiful hotel as a Kimpton."

The Principal transformed the former Palace Hotel back in 2016, launching with a star-studded party that included a DJ set from Mark Ronson.

The building is also home to The Refuge restaurant and one of the most remarkable bar spaces in the country.
