The Odsonne Edouard Celtic transfer playbook Rangers can borrow to spark skyrocketing Alfredo Morelos fee

Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos has never been far from a transfer rumour after his success in the Scottish Premiership. Just across the city, Odsonne Edouard knew that feeling all too well before he was finally sold by Celtic to Crystal Palace.

Every window sparked countless links with Edouard before Crystal Palace boss Patrick Vieira gave the Frenchman his crack at the English Premier League in a £14million move away from Celtic Park. A £14 million move to the Eagles brought an end to his four-year stay in Glasgow's east end with for a fee that could rise to £18.5 million.

This summer it's all attention on Morelos as he approaches the final year of his contract. Reports in Spain claimed Rangers had submitted an offer from Seville €8million, and although the Ibrox club appear to have refuted those suggestions it's hard to see this being the last prospective buyer weighing up a deal for the Colombian.

It's an eerily similar scenario to what Celtic's board faced with their talisman - a stick or twist decision. And Rangers will be able to take a couple of tips forward in their negotiations.

Despite lifting four Scottish Premiership titles and notching two Golden Boot awards during his time at Parkhead, it became clear that after a disastrous final season under Neil Lennon, time was up for Edouard. However, with a year left on his contract the club's board didn't rush into a quick-fire sale to get the frontman off their books.

Brendan Rodgers had been keen on bringing the striker to Leicester City, but the deal collapsed with Celtic playing hardball over their valuation at the start of the window. Edouard would remain a Celtic player at the start of the Ange Postecoglou era taking part in several high-profile fixtures as including the Champions League playoff, Europa League playoff, and first derby showdown of the campaign with Rangers.

The 24-year-old was only sold when Palace met the price tag, with Celtic in line to recoup up to £18million for a player who could have left for nothing just months later when he left at the end of August.

Rangers sporting director Ross Wilson could employ the same tactics with Morelos to hold out for top dollar this summer. Gio van Bronckhorst will be attempting to navigate a path to the Champions League playoff and will want to have the Ibrox talisman leading the line.

It's a risk, but if Rangers don't blink they could see clubs spending big towards the end of the window to land a striker with a proven track record both in Scotland and in the Europa League. If €8million is the starting offer, Rangers will look to follow their rivals example and see that skyrocket in the coming months.
