Here is today's edition of The Nottinghamian:

Hello,

Today's edition of The Nottinghamian takes a look at the planned energy protest taking place this weekend. Across the country people are expected to take part in protests and rallies against the profits made by energy companies.

We will also discuss a cafe in Bulwell giving opportunities to adults with learning difficulties as well as all the rides set to be on offer at this year's Goose Fair. Plus we hear Nottingham's reaction to the latest financial news.

Enough is enough

There will be a rally at Old Market Square to demand an end to energy companies' high profits (Nottingham Post/Marie Wilson)

Nottingham will join a national day of action to say 'enough is enough' as energy prices and the cost of living soars. The protest, which is taking place across England, will start in Lower Parliament Street before moving to Station Street and ending at Market Square on Saturday, October 1.

The protest will start at 6.30am and travel through the city centre before arriving at the E.O.N offices on Burton Street to demand an end to the high profits being reported by energy companies. Energy companies have been posting record profits as people struggle to pay higher bills.

The march will move towards Market Square for a rally where speakers such as Nadia Whittome MP and representatives from the RMT and CWU will speak. They will be joined by representatives from Acorn Housing Union and other community groups. Campaign group Enough is Enough is coordinating protests across thirteen cities in the UK.

'Happy place'

The Curious Cafe in Bulwell offers work opportunities for adults with learning difficulties (Nottingham Post)

A new cafe in Bulwell has been described as the beating heart of the community. The Alice in Wonderland-themed Curious Cafe and gift shop is located in Main Street in Bulwell and opened during the summer. The cafe is run by community interest company, Learning in Fun Environment (LIFE) after the team wanted to provide working opportunities for adults with learning difficulties.

Director Suzie Wright said the cafe works with students who serve, chat and check on customers. In doing so, they learn different skills and get to meet members of the local community. She said: "We always wanted to run a cafe to showcase what students with disabilities are able to do and break down some of the barriers and misconceptions surrounding special needs."

The cafe also runs several initiatives aimed at supporting people who may be struggling with loneliness or the cost of living increases. They operate a 'chatter and natter' table where customers can come in on their own, sit and be joined by others for a random discussion. There is also a 'coffee and kindness' board where customers can pay for a coffee in advance for another person and the cafe offers surplus food for the community to help themselves.

Suzie added: "It's been amazing. Our biggest struggle is that people don't know we are here but we've heard genuinely positive things. We have a family that calls the cafe their 'happy place' and come every weekend. We have another lady who said we are becoming the 'beating heart of Bulwell. All of these things make it worthwhile." Notts says

We hear your thoughts on the hot topic of the day (Lisa Walsh)

As the government proposed its 'mini budget' this week, the UK economy has been left in a state of limbo. We asked the people of Nottingham: "What do you make of the 'mini budget'?"

Sally Green, 33, from Wollaton said: "It is a nightmare. To be totally honest, I don't know how much it will affect me but I know it will in some way or another. I am worried about the mortgage payments."

John Copeland, 67, from Carlton added: "It is not good. They seem to have made the mess worse. I don't know what they can do to fix it. I feel lucky I am mortgage free but it is still not good."

Emma O'Connor, 26, lives in the city centre. She said: "I feel a bit lost. I am in the process of getting a mortgage and I am unsure how it will impact that. My guess is that it won't be good. I just hope it gets sorted soon so I am not worrying about it."

Thrills of the fair

Take a look at the full list of rides for Goose Fair 2022 (Tracey Whitefoot/Nottingham City Council)

With just days to go until Goose Fair opens, the list of rides has been announced. Thrill seekers can expect exciting new rides as well as returning classics. If that isn't your thing then there are still plenty of family fun fair activities, stalls and food.

The fair will be returning to the Forest Recreation Ground, opening on Friday, September 30 at 4pm, for an extended run of 10 days until Sunday, October 9. With over 400,000 visitors expected, there is something for everyone. Void, which made its debut at Hull Fair last year, will be providing the thrills at Nottingham's biggest fair.

Another new ride coming to Goose Fair for the first time is the UK's newest loop fighter Red Devil. Infinity, Drop Zone, The Storm, Cole's Sizzler, Tornado 2, Body Count, Rhythm Dancer, Birch's Waltzer, Harris's Dodgems and Holland Dodgems are also newcomers for 2022.
