The Notebook fans left distraught as Netflix CHANGES the film's heart-breaking ending

Romantic: Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams as Noah and Allie in the film

Netflix has left fans of Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams’ tear-jerking romantic drama The Notebook livid after changing the film’s heart-wrenching ending.

The original ending of the 2004 film sees elderly versions of Gosling and McAdams’ characters Noah and Allie embracing in bed before dying in one another’s arms.

However, users of the streaming service have noticed that this devastating final scene has been swapped for a shot of birds flying over a lake.

Viewers were not happy about the change to the movie’s famous ending, and suggested that they had missed out on the “best part” of the film.

Shocked: Fans weren't happy with the new ending

“Why did Netflix change the ending of The Notebook the best part of watching it is having your heart break at the end?” one distraught fan asked on Twitter.

“In shock… Netflix has changed the end of The Notebook!!!!!! How dare they take away the opportunity to sob uncontrollably!” another wrote.

“Why has @netflixUK changed the ending to The Notebook!?” another asked. “I was going to watch it but now I’m going to need to buy it instead?”

Standard Online has contacted Netflix for comment.

The film is based on Nicholas Sparks’ novel, and switches between flashbacks and the present day to follow the relationship that unfolds between Noah and Allie, who fall in love despite being from very different social backgrounds.

The present day scenes show nursing home patient ‘Duke’ narrating the romance to a female friend, as it soon becomes apparent that he is in fact Noah while the friend is Allie, who can no longer remember their story due to dementia.

Directed by John Cassavetes, it garnered a handful of Teen Choice Awards and famously won then-couple Gosling and McAdams an MTV Movie Award for Best Kiss.
