The Northumberland areas with the highest coronavirus infection rates

These are the areas with the highest coronavirus infection levels in Northumberland.

Alnwick has the highest rate of infection after recording 45 new cases in the week leading up to January 23.

The Berwick area also saw a spike in cases, with Berwick-upon-Tweed Town recording 59 new cases, while there were 31 positive cases in Berwick-upon-Tweed West and Holy Island - a jump of 121.4%.

Public Health England data shows that Hexham and Acomb recorded 79 cases, giving it the third highest rate of infection in the area.

In contrast, the infection was suppressed in Rothbury and Longframlington after fewer than three cases were recorded.

Morpeth Central and East had just three cases, while Seahouses, Belford and Wooler had six positive cases.

Overall, Northumberland has an infection rate of 232.6 per 100,000 of population after 750 cases were recorded - a drop of 9.2%.

It comes as the number of patients being treated in North East hospitals hit a record high in January.

Until this month, the highest daily figures for bed occupancy by patients confirmed to have coronavirus was on April 9 last year at the start of the pandemic when the figure reached 778.

However, that number was exceeded on January 11 when it reached 817.
